How to Package Pokémon Cards Safely
Knowing how to prepare and protect your Pokémon cards before shipping is, possibly, the most critical skill for any collector or seller.
Pokémon cards are extremely delicate collectible items: being essentially simple cardboard, they can bend, stain, or tear very easily. A small flaw can drastically alter the condition and value of your collectible.
This is why this guide focuses exclusively on offering clear instructions and practical ideas to achieve a perfect, safe, and shipment-proof packaging.
Inner Packaging
To start, we must protect the card from any contact. For this reason, we are going to use a classic layer-by-layer packaging, each with a specific function.
1. Soft Sleeve (Penny Sleeve)
The known penny sleeves are the essential complement for every collector. They are simple soft plastic sleeves that protect the card from any superficial contact. There is also the option of double sleeving, which consists of using a perfect fit sleeve and then placing a penny sleeve on top for additional protection. If you decide to use this method, it is crucial to find sleeves that fit the card well and never force it when inserting it, as some perfect fit sleeves that are too tight can exert pressure on the edges.

2. Rigid Protector (Toploader or Card Saver)
The second layer is one of the most important for shipping a card and involves the use of the Toploader or Card Saver. The Toploader is a rigid plastic protective sleeve that prevents the card from bending once inside it. This is why the card is inserted once it has already been sleeved with the soft sleeve, as if it is inserted without it, it is very likely to scratch. Another option, and the preferred one by professional grading companies, are the Card Savers, which are semi-rigid plastic sleeves that prevent the card from moving once inside.

3. Outer Sleeve (Team Bag)
This layer consists of sleeving the Toploader or Card Saver with a larger sealable sleeve (commonly known as Team Bag). Its function is triple: it helps prevent the card from sliding out of the rigid protector, prevents dust or dirt from entering, and offers one more layer of cushioning against rubbing.

Outer Packaging
The outer packaging will be responsible for protecting our card from any manipulation, impact, or pressure exerted by courier services.
1. Anti-Bending Protection
It is highly recommended to reinforce the card's protection by creating a "sandwich" with the rigid protector. This is achieved by placing the Toploader or Card Saver between two pieces of thick cardboard or foam board. This method is especially crucial if the card is going to be sent in an envelope, and it is a fundamental safety measure even when a Toploader or Card Saver is already used.

2. Envelope or Box
For the outer packaging, an envelope or a box can be used. If we opt for an envelope, it is strongly recommended to use one padded with bubble wrap for better protection against impacts. If, on the other hand, we opt for a box, it is vital to use filling material for the empty spaces, such as bubble wrap, packing peanuts, or crumpled paper, to prevent internal movement of the package.

3. Final Sealing
Finally, to guarantee safety during transit, we must seal the box or envelope with strong and resistant packaging tape. This not only prevents the package from accidentally opening, but also prevents the entry of moisture or dirt.

The success of a Pokémon card transaction resides both in the quality of the card and the safety of its journey. Following these layers of protection drastically minimizes the risk of damage from bending, scratching, or manipulation. Investing time in quality packaging is the best insurance policy for maintaining the value and condition of any collectible card.
